Japan U22 soccer team finishes in second place

In soccer, Japan's national Under-22 squad finished in second place after being defeated by Brazil in the final of an international competition in France.

 


Japan advanced to the final of the Toulon Tournament for the first time after beating Mexico in penalty kick shootouts.In the 19th minute of the final on Saturday, Brazil scored its first goal. In the 39th minute, Japanese striker Koki Ogawa curled an equalizer into the net. In the second half, neither side scored. Tied 1-1, the game went into penalty shootouts. All Brazilian players succeeded in the penalty shootouts.

 


Japan also got four successful kicks, but their fifth and last kicker Reo Hatate failed to find the net. This is Brazil's ninth Toulon Tournament title. Japan's finish in second place is their highest-ever in this competition.—NHK
