Indonesian capital extends transitional COVID-19 restrictions for another two weeks

Jakarta has extended its transitional period of the large-scale social restrictions for another two weeks starting on Thursday.


The policy, known in the country by its acronym PSBB, was announced by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on his social media on Thursday evening.


He said the administration officially extended the transitional period of the large-scale social restrictions effective from Aug. 28 to Sept. 10.


Jakarta is the worst-affected province in Indonesia's COVID-19 outbreak, followed by East Java and Central Java.


According to the latest data released by the Health Ministry on Thursday, Jakarta recorded 760 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 36,213. The coronavirus had claimed 1,146 lives in the city.


Meanwhile, the total cases in the country had increased to 162,884 with the death toll adding to 7,064, the ministry's data said.
