Huawei CFO loses court bid in Canada

28 May

A Canadian judge has ruled that the US extradition case against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou should proceed to the next stage.

The chief financial officer of the Chinese telecom giant was arrested in Canada in December 2018 at the request of the United States, on suspicion of doing business with Iran in violation of US sanctions.

Meng faces fraud charges in the US.

Under Canadian law, she would not be extradited unless her actions that constitute a crime in the US are also deemed illegal in Canada.

Meng claimed at hearing in January that she did not commit a crime under Canadian law. But the court dismissed her claim on Wednesday.

The final decision on whether to hand her over to the US will be made by Canada's justice minister.

Huawei issued a statement expressing disappointment with the court's ruling.

The company says it continues to support Meng's pursuit of justice and freedom, and expects that Canada's judicial system will ultimately prove her innocence.
