Japan's Honda Motor has unveiled the first electric vehicle it will sell in the domestic market, as environmental regulations get stricter around the globe.

The company says the four-seat EV can be used for tasks such as commuting or shopping. The car can travel nearly 300 kilometers on a single charge.

Drivers can unlock and start the vehicle with a smartphone. It comes with a high-tech 'hands-free' parking system.

The car, which goes on sale from late October, has a price tag starting at 4.5 million yen, or about 43,000 dollars. The automaker hopes to shift 1,000 of the vehicles each year.

Other Japanese car companies like Toyota, Nissan and Mazda are also gearing up to get new EVs on the road this year and next.
