Hackers target high-profile Twitter accounts

16 July

US media reports say unidentified hackers hijacked the Twitter accounts of high-profile politicians, business leaders and top companies on Wednesday.

Twitter says most users have become able to post again after the security incident.

Those targeted include former Vice President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Business giants such as Apple and Uber also had their official accounts hijacked.

Fake tweets posted on these accounts reportedly offered to double the money sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address.
Twitter said it was aware of the security incident and it was investigating and working to fix it.

The company later said most users were believed to be able to send tweets again as of Wednesday evening, but account functionality remains unstable.

Observers say the incident is likely to cast doubt on Twitter's credibility.
