Global daily coronavirus count hits record high

The World Health Organization says the worldwide daily count of coronavirus cases has hit a record high of more than 230,000.

Data received by the WHO in the 24-hour period up to Sunday morning shows 230,370 people around the globe were confirmed to have been infected with the virus.

The number of new cases is rising particularly sharply in Americas. The United States accounts for 28 percent of the total, and Brazil comprises about 19 percent of the tally.

India and South Africa also confirmed large numbers of new infections. The figure for India surpassed 20,000, and the number for South Africa was over 10,000.

Meanwhile, European nations are reporting fewer cases.
