Fires prompt state of emergency in California

20 August

California has declared an emergency as dozens of wildfires rage across the US West Coast state.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency on Tuesday to allow government agencies to utilize extra resources to combat the flames and protect public safety.

The fires have emerged as a result of a severe heat wave and dry weather.

The Los Angeles Times reports more than 30 fires continue to burn. Footage from the Golden State shows blazing homes and skies darkened from smoke.

US weather authorities say temperatures will remain high throughout the week while humidity levels will drop, increasing the risk of wildfires.
