Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health on Thursday reported a total of 105,508 cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and 6,200 deaths since the onset of the outbreak.

In the previous 24 hours, tests detected 1,033 new cases and 54 more patients died.

The province of Pichincha continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic in the South American country, with a total of 21,883 cases, followed by Guayas, with 18,407 cases.

The majority of the infections in Pichincha are concentrated in the capital city of Quito, which has registered 19,794 cases.

Despite the increase in cases in Quito, the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE), the body that is managing the health crisis, has authorized the reopening of theaters, cinemas and auditoriums at 30 percent capacity.

In addition, the COE announced that certain modes of transportation may now operate at 75 percent capacity. The COE also approved reopening guidelines for gyms and sports clubs.

On June 1, the Ecuadorian government announced the gradual reopening of the country in order to reactivate the economy.
