DISASTER preparedness and response refers to the actions and strategies put in place to mitigate the effects of disasters. Disaster preparedness involves the measures taken before a disaster occurs to reduce the probability of harm or damage, while disaster response involves the actions taken during and immediately after a disaster to save lives and prevent further damage.

Disaster preparedness refers to the measures taken to prepare for and reduce the devastating effects of a disaster. This might entail predicting when and where a disaster might take place, and whenever possible, preventing the disaster. When preventing a disaster is not possible, disaster preparation also includes the planning, organizing, training and equipping of local communities to have the resources and knowledge necessary to combat the effects of the disaster when and if it takes place.

Disaster preparedness and response involve a comprehensive approach to emergency situations. At the moment some steps you can take: Assess your risks: Identify the types of disasters that are most likely to occur in your area, such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, or tornadoes. Learn about warning signs, evacuation routes, and emergency procedures specific to each type of disaster, Develop a plan: Create a disaster plan for your household or workplace. This plan should include emergency contact information, evacuation routes, and a communication strategy. Practice your plan regularly, Build an emergency kit: Gather emergency supplies such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and a radio. Keep the kit in a designated location that is easily accessible in case of an emergency, Stay informed: Keep up to date with weather alerts, news reports, and emergency notifications. Follow your local emergency management agency on social media or sign up for alerts via text or email, Volunteer: Consider volunteering with local emergency response organizations or community groups to help with disaster relief efforts. This can involve helping with evacuation, providing first aid, or assisting with rescue efforts, and Practice evacuation drills: Regularly practice evacuation drills so that everyone in your household or workplace knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Disaster preparedness is an ongoing process, and it’s important to regularly review and update your plan and emergency kit. By taking these steps, you can help minimize the impact of disasters and ensure a safe response.

Disaster response refers to the actions taken directly after a destructive event occurs. This may include but is not limited to Search and rescue efforts, Emergency healthcare and injury assessment, Food and water management and Shelter assignment for displaced individuals and families.
