The total number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus has topped 100 million worldwide.

Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University show the figure hit 100,063,707 as of 21:30 UTC on Tuesday.

By region, the Americas accounted for more than 40 percent of the total, with over 40 million cases.

The United States, which confirmed the largest number of infections, reported a weekly average of around 170,000 daily new cases over the past week.

Vaccination efforts are underway mainly in developed countries.

Global data compiled by Our World in Data, a website run by researchers at the University of Oxford, show that about 69 million vaccine doses have been administered worldwide as of Tuesday.

Some 63 million people have received at least one dose, but that's only a limited number in the world population.

The surge in infections is still out of control with a new variant of the virus emerging in Britain, which was later found in other parts in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Another new variant has been confirmed in South Africa.
