China confirms 41 cases of mystery pneumonia

Health authorities in China say that as of Wednesday, 41 people in the city of Wuhan in the inland province of Hubei had fallen ill with pneumonia that may be linked to a new type of coronavirus.

One of them, a 61-year-old man, has died and six other people are in serious condition. Seven patients have already recovered and left hospital. Others have been quarantined as they undergo treatment, and they're said to be in stable condition.

Health authorities in Thailand said on Monday that the new coronavirus was detected earlier this month in a 61-year-old female tourist from Wuhan who had a fever.

In South Korea, a Chinese woman who had traveled to Wuhan showed symptoms of pneumonia earlier this month. But health authorities said last week that her illness was not linked to the outbreak in China.

Taiwan and Hong Kong have tightened quarantine inspections at airports and seaports.
