Car bomb kills 9 at police academy in Colombia

A car bomb at a police academy killed nine people in the Colombian capital on Thursday. Local police say more than 50 others were wounded.

The driver, a man, rammed into the academy in Bogota before the explosion.Many police officers and their families had gathered at the site to participate in an event.So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

 

President Ivan Duque denounced the attack as terror and said in a statement that the Colombian people will not bend in the face of violence.

 

The government and the anti-government guerrilla Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, reached a peace agreement in 2016.

 

It had continued peace negotiations with another guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army, or ELN.

President Duque said the peace agreement with FARC should be reviewed and suspended negotiations with ELN. He took office six months ago.

 

FARC opposed the president and some of its members are continuing revolutionary actions. ELN also announced an intention to continue its activities.
