Brazil posts highest daily COVID-19 death toll

26 May

Brazil recorded 807 deaths from the coronavirus on Monday, marking the highest daily death toll among any country.

Brazil's government reported 374,898 new infections on Monday. The total death toll came to 23,473. The daily fatality was higher than the 620 deaths reported on the same day in the United States.

Many of the deaths in Brazil are thought to have taken place in slums known as favelas.

Brazil has had lockdown measures in place since mid-March, mainly in large cities such as Sao Paulo. But the virus is continuing to spread in favelas, which are heavily congested and have poor hygiene.

Infections are surging in other South American countries such as Ecuador and Chile.
