Black gram, pigeon pea prices surge in pre-Thingyan holidays

The prices of black grams and pigeon peas showed upticks prior to the Thingyan holidays starting from 13 April.

 

The prices stood at K3.015 million per tonne of black grams (Fair Average Quality), K3.26 million per tonne of black grams (Special Quality) and K3.775 million per tonne of pigeon peas on 30 March. The prices moved up to K3.18 million per tonne of black grams FAQ, K3.44 mil­lion per tonne of black grams SQ and K3.99 million per tonne of pigeon peas on 6 April. The figures reflected an increase of K168,000 per tonne of black grams and K215,000 per tonne of pigeon peas in the past six days.

 

Similarly, the FOB price is also up by US$30 per tonne within a week. The FOB pric­es were $945-$965 per tonne of black grams FAQ, $1,030-$1,050 per tonne of black grams SQ and $1,160-1,180 per tonne of pi­geon peas on 28-30 March. They went up to $970-$990 per tonne of black gram FAQ, $1,060-$1,080 per tonne of black grams SQ and $1,190-$1,210 per tonne of pigeon peas on 4-6 April.

 

Meanwhile, the price of green grams did not fluctuate this week. A total of 135 con­tainers (3,240 tonnes) of black grams were transacted during the six market opening days this month.

 

With the pulse prices ris­ing, the domestic market sees brisk sales. The traders and growers are financially doing well. It contributes to a coun­try’s foreign earnings as well. — TWA/KK
