Paraguay's interior ministry said on Sunday that the escape occurred in Amambay, which borders Brazil.

Officials say they discovered a tunnel leading out of the prison, and cells contained some 200 bags of earth apparently excavated to create the tunnel.

They also say one inmate was detained while trying to flee through the tunnel.

The interior ministry says many of the 75 escapees were members of a crime organization considered the largest arms and drug traffickers in Brazil, and they may have fled across the border.

The ministry plans to investigate whether there were any collaborators inside the prison.
