5.8-magnitude quake strikes off eastern Indonesia

A shallow quake measuring 5.8 magnitude rocked Indonesia's eastern North Maluku province on Thursday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said.


The quake struck at 6:46 a.m. Jakarta time Thursday (2346 GMT Wednesday) with an epicenter at 11 km southwest Ternate city and the shallow of 10 km under the seabed.


The quake was not potential to trigger a tsunami.


The intensity of the quake was felt at III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Ternate city, Soffi town, Jailolo town and Tidore town in the province and nearby North Sulawesi province's capital of Manado.


Indonesia is frequently hit by quakes as it lies on the quake-prone zone of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
