Two people including a Buddhist monk were killed after an over-speeding car smashed into a channel in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region on 5 June.
Upon receiving information about the traffic accident, a group of local authorities comprising policemen and eyewitnesses led by Township Administrator U Win Shwe rushed to the scene of accident to assess the situation. The tragic accident occurred near Kani Village at about 6:15 p.m. yesterday. A car driven by a Buddhist monk named U Thanvara, 40 years old abbot from a monastery in Lema Village with one woman aboard plunged into a channel of Myauk Mone Dam.
The two people died on the spot although the villagers attempted to rescue them. The local police station filed a charge against the Buddhist monk over reckless driving.—Ye Win Naing
