18 people confirmed dead in Turkey earthquake

The Turkish government says 18 people have been confirmed dead in a powerful earthquake that hit the country's east on Friday. The quake caused 30 buildings to collapse in hard-hit areas.

The US Geological Survey says the magnitude 6.7 tremor struck Elazig province at 8:55 p.m., local time.

Turkish officials say more than 600 people have been treated in hospitals.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said some 30 people were trapped in the debris of toppled buildings.

Search and rescue teams have been working through the night.

Turkey is prone to earthquakes. A tremor that hit the country's east in 2011 killed some 600 people. Another major quake rocked the western part of the country in 1999, leaving more than 17,000 dead.
