12 arrested in HK linked to handover ceremony

Hong Kong police say they have arrested 12 people who allegedly tried to obstruct a ceremony to mark the 22nd anniversary of the territory's handover to China.

Police said on Wednesday they had apprehended 12 suspects, aged 14 to 36, on suspicion of possessing weapons, unlawful assembly and other charges.

Protests continue against a bill to enable extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China.

On Monday, a large number of people, mainly youngsters, occupied roads around the Legislative Council building to obstruct the July 1 ceremony.

Some of them stormed the building and vandalized the interior.

The Hong Kong government says it will deal strictly with violent acts.

Some pro-democracy groups and others are defending the protesters' acts, saying the government is responsible because it is ignoring the voice of citizens.
