MoEE Union Minister addresses ASEAN-India High- Level Conference on Renewable Energy

THE Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of External Affairs, India, in collaboration with the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), are jointly hosting the ASEAN-India High-Level Conference on Renewable Energy virtually under the theme of “Experience and Innovations for Integrated Renewables Market” on 7 and 8 February. 

Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Aung Than Oo delivered an opening speech at the opening ceremony of the twoday conference. 

In his speech, the Union minister said 56 per cent of Myanmar’s electricity is produced from natural gas while 40 per cent is from hydropower, three per cent from coal and one per cent from renewable energy. The country has set a target of nationwide electrification by 2030 and is estimated to generate nine per cent of power from renewable energy such as solar energy and wind energy. 

The government starts running 13 solar power projects that can produce 370MW and also arranges to develop further 3 solar power projects to produce 390MW. Moreover, the Floating Solar projects, Rooftop Solar project and small-medium scale hydropower projects are also being implemented across the nation. The government makes efforts to trade electricity through neighbouring countries—China, India, Laos and Thailand. Being an ASEAN member country, Myanmar will also set a target of 23 per cent of renewable energy share in Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) by 2025. 

Then, the senior officials and experts exchanged views on cooperation works on the renewable energy sector between ASEAN and India and their experiences regarding renewable energy. — MNA
