US media: Osama bin Laden's son is dead

1 August

US media outlets have reported the death of Osama bin Laden's son, who was viewed by the US government as the next leader of Al Qaeda.

The New York Times and NBC News quoted US government officials as saying Hamza bin Laden is dead.

The United States had seen him as the successor of Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the attacks of September 11, 2001 as the leader of Al Qaeda.

In 2011, bin Laden was killed by US Special Forces in Pakistan. His son called for retaliatory attacks against the US.

The US government put Hamza bin Laden on its terror watch list in 2017. In February, it offered a reward of up to one million dollars for information on his whereabouts.

US media reported the possibility that he was killed before the reward was announced and the US was involved in the operation that killed him.

US President Donald Trump refused to comment on this matter when he was asked by reporters.
