Tropical Storm Nari heading for eastern Japan

Japanese weather officials say a tropical storm may bring heavy rain to Pacific coastal areas of eastern Japan from Saturday through Sunday. They are warning people to be on the alert for possible landslides and floods.

The Meteorological Agency says Tropical Storm Nari was over waters south of Japan as of Friday morning and is moving north.

Agency officials say some Pacific coastal areas of eastern Japan could have more than 50 millimeters of rainfall, accompanied by localized thunderstorms.

They say 150 millimeters of rain is expected in the Tokai region in the 24 hours until Saturday morning, and 80 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region.

They say rainfall in the 24-hour period from Saturday morning may reach 100 to 200 millimeters in the Tokai region, and 100 to 150 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region.

Officials are urging people in these areas to check the latest weather information and to brace themselves for possible mudslides, floods and strong winds.
