Tons of narcotics destroyed in Southeast Asia

June 26th is designated as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Authorities in Southeast Asia marked the occasion by incinerating tons of narcotics.

Police in Myanmar set fire to piles of illegal drugs. The country is one of the region's biggest producers of heroin and methamphetamine.

Officials in Thailand held a similar event. They say the amount of drugs seized has grown so large that it took authorities two days to destroy them.

The 16 tons of narcotics is worth more than 600 million dollars. The United Nations designated the international day in 1987 to draw attention to drug abuse and efforts to stop it.
