Taiwan seeks damages over derailment

Taiwan's railway authorities say they have asked a Japanese trading company to pay damages over a fatal derailment last year.

A Japanese-made eight-car express train derailed in the northeastern county of Yilan in October 2018, killing 18 people.

Sumitomo Corp. received the order from Taiwan's railway authorities, and Nippon Sharyo manufactured the trains.

Taiwanese investigators said the train's driver switched off its automatic safety system as the train stopped multiple times due to problems with a braking system. They said, as a result, the train entered a bend at a dangerously high speed.

Nippon Sharyo admitted in November that there was a design error. It says the 136 train cars it produced for Taiwan were not equipped with a system to notify the command center if the safety system was switched off.

The railway authorities announced on Tuesday that they have delivered a written demand asking Sumitomo to pay damages.
