S.Korean military says N.Korea fired projectiles

South Korea's military says North Korea fired projectiles off its eastern coast on Friday morning.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said the projectiles were launched twice from the North's Gangwon Province.

The US and South Korean militaries are analyzing the distances traveled and altitudes of the objects, which were fired toward the Sea of Japan.

The Japanese government said it has not confirmed any missiles entering its territory or exclusive economic zone. It said there is no immediate threat to national security.

The launch is the sixth by Pyongyang since July 25 of projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles.

North Korea has been denouncing US-South Korea joint military drills scheduled to continue until Tuesday.

The country has reportedly informed US officials that it will halt the launches and enter negotiations for denuclearization after the drills end.

Pyongyang has also criticized Seoul over its demands to halt the launches, saying it will only talk with the US. US President Donald Trump has said he doesn't take issue with short-range test-firings by the North.

Military analysts say North Korea is using what appears to be an appeasement stance by the US as an opportunity to improve its ballistic-missile technology.
