President Trump acquitted in impeachment trial

6 February

The impeachment trial against US President Donald Trump has ended with him acquitted of all charges. It's only the third such trial in US history.

Wednesday's outcome had been widely expected, with senators voting almost exclusively along party lines in the deeply divided, Republican-controlled, chamber.

Trump was charged with pressuring Ukraine for his own political gain and obstructing Congress as it investigated the case.

No US president has ever been removed from office through impeachment. A two-thirds majority in the Senate is required for conviction, and Wednesday's votes fell well short of that threshold for both abuse of power and obstruction of congress.

Last week, the Senate voted down a call by the Democratic Party to summon new witnesses.

Media reports suggested former National Security Advisor John Bolton had relevant information, but he was not called to testify.

Trump is expected to tout his innocence when campaigning for re-election in November.
