Parts of NYC to be locked down again

New York City is planning to introduce lockdown measures again in areas where coronavirus cases are resurging.

Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement at a news conference on Sunday. He said that he plans to reinstate lockdowns in several neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The coronavirus test positivity rate has been above 3 percent in those locations for the past seven days.

Schools will be closed, and students will learn remotely. Businesses will be shut down in those communities. But essential ones, such as medical facilities and supermarkets, will remain open.

The city says that the lockdowns will last for at least two weeks. They will begin on Wednesday, after the governor of New York State approves the plan.

New York City was once the epicenter of the outbreak in the country and was locked down in March.

At the end of September, the city started allowing schools to provide in-person classes and restaurants to serve customers indoors again.
