Palestinian protesters, Israeli forces clash

30 January

Clashes have erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinians protesting US President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan.

Palestinians called for rallies after the plan was unveiled on Tuesday.

Trump says it is aimed at ending decades of conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. But it is seen as reflecting his pro-Israel position, as it recognizes most of the Israeli settlements in the West Bank as Israeli territories.

Palestinians rallied in at least six locations including the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Hebron on Wednesday.

In Bethlehem, about 200 people marched, carrying a banner that said only Jerusalem is the future capital of Palestine.

They threw stones at Israeli forces, who responded by firing a number of tear gas canisters.

Three people were injured in a series of clashes. The Israeli forces also fired live bullets.

Further clashes are feared as the Palestinians are expected to hold major rallies after Friday prayers.
