Pakistan PM congratulates Modi

Leaders around the world have been congratulating Indian Prime Minister on his re-election, including his counterpart in Pakistan.

 

Imran Khan said on Twitter that he looks forward to working with Modi for "peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia.

 

But as the votes were being tallied on Thursday, the Pakistani military also test-fired a ballistic missile.

It says the surface-to-surface Shaheen-II is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, and has a range of 1,500 kilometers.

 

Tensions have been running high between the two countries since February, when violence broke out in the disputed Kashmir region.

 

Forty Indian troops were killed in a suicide attack by an Islamic extremist group. The Indian Air Force responded with air strikes on the group's bases across the border, bringing the two countries to the brink of war.

 

 Modi capitalized on the tensions during his re-election campaign, saying India needed his strong leadership to deal with external threats.
