New Zealand scaling down search after eruption

19 December

New Zealand police say they are scaling down a search for those missing after a volcanic eruption last week.

They say they will keep trying to recover the bodies but that they may never be found.

Police say an Australian teenager and a New Zealand tour guide are still missing.

Rescuers have searched both the land and sea since the White Island eruption on December 9.

Police believe a storm right after the eruption may have washed the bodies into the ocean.

Sixteen others died and about 30 remain hospitalized.

New Zealand's safety regulator is investigating whether tour operators and others involved followed the rules.

Some people are asking why the visits were allowed after the country's seismic monitoring agency raised the alert level for the volcano weeks earlier.
