Modi's ruling coalition wins general elections

India's ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a majority of seats in general elections, paving the way for him to serve a second term.

 

Vote counting for the lower house of parliament took place on Thursday. Before midnight, results for about 70 percent of the 542 contested seats were determined.

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies gained 276 seats. The opposition bloc, led by Rahul Gandhi's Congress party, secured 66.

 

Modi declared a victory in front of huge crowds of supporters in the capital, New Delhi, on Thursday night. He pledged to do all he can for the sake of the people.

The Modi administration achieved high economic growth during his first term.
