Labour authorities and representatives of employers and employees held a meeting in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone in Yangon yesterday to form the Workers Coordinating Committee-WCC.
At the meeting, Union Minister U Thein Swe said those at the meeting seek to form Workers Coordinating Committees in factories, workshops and work sites, which will become the basic group for peacefully settling disagreements.
The ministry is prioritizing the enacting and amending of labour laws, in addition to creating job opportunities, ensuring that workers have appropriate jobs, as well as safe and healthy work sites, and obtain their rights, in accordance with existing labour laws.
According to the Settlement of Labour Disputes Law in any workshops or sites that have 30 workers and above, the employer is to form Workers Coordinating Committees according to the law. The law states that complaints by employers or employees are to be made to the committee, and the committee is to discuss and resolve complaints. In addition to resolving and reducing disagreements and conflicts between employers and employees, requirements and requests can be made in advance, resulting in resolution and preventing any disagreements or conflicts from arising.
That was the reason this meeting was held, to press for the establishment of Workers Coordinating Committees, said the Union Minister.
Later, possible difficulties and issues in forming Workers Coordinating Committees were discussed by the representatives of employers and workers. After the meeting, the Union Minister went to Bogard Lingerie Myanmar Training Center of Bogard Lingerie (Yangon) Ltd, owned by Mr. Chung Fook Pui in Shwe Than Lwin Industry Zone, Hlinethaya Township, and inspected the group’s assessment of standards pertaining to 50 workers for the Garment Sewing Machine Operator (Level-1) position.—MNA
