Kenya's former president Daniel arap Moi dies

Former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi, who ruled the country for 24 years, died on Tuesday.

He was 95 years old.

Moi's death was announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Moi worked as a schoolteacher before heading movements that led to Kenya's independence from Britain in 1963. He became the nation's second president and remained in power until 2002.

His supporters credited him for promoting dialogue with the numerous ethnic groups in the country, while critics called him an autocratic ruler.

In 1982, he amended the constitution that made Kenya effectively a one-party state.

A multi-party system was reintroduced in 1991, but elections were marred by oppression and ethnic violence under Moi's rule.
