Indonesians search for trapped miners

Rescue efforts continue at a collapsed mine on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia.

Authorities say as many as 100 miners may be trapped. The death toll has reached nine and another 19 people have been pulled out with injuries.

The small unlicensed gold mine in North Sulawesi collapsed last week.

Wooden structures broke down due to shifting soil and the large number of pits dug into steep jungle terrain.
More than 200 workers are trying to find survivors.

A spokesperson for Indonesia's disaster agency says it's unknown exactly how many are trapped.

That's because there is limited information coming from the miners' families, many of whom live far away.

The collapsed mine is one of many small-scale illegal operations in Indonesia that pose high safety risks.
