Thanks to a peak in fruit exports leading up to the Chinese New Year, Myanmar’s overall exports between 30 December 2023 and 5 January 2024 surpassed US$234 million, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
The exports of Myanmar’s agricultural produce, including corn, pigeon pea, chickpea, butter bean, peanut, sesame, onion, dried ginger, tamarind, watermelon, avocado, tangerine, tissue-culture banana, and banana with natural reproduction, significantly increased.
As Chinese New Year 2024 approaches, the demand for Myanmar’s fruits is steadily growing. During the week ending 5 January, Myanmar shipped about 35,000 tonnes of watermelon, muskmelon, and bananas to China through Kengtung, Lweje, and Kampaiti border points.
Additionally, Myanmar exported tangerines, avocados, and bananas to Thailand at Tachilek and Maungtaw borders. The fruit exports for that week amounted to over $10 million.
Moreover, fisheries exports in the three modes of transport (air, sea, and road at the border) also surged, covering over 20 foreign countries.
Myanmar shipped 10,850 tonnes of fisheries that week, with 3,070 tonnes destined for external markets via maritime trade and 7,780 tonnes sent to neighbouring countries (China and Thailand) at borders. — TWA/KK
