Cooperation between all stakeholders key for free and fair elections

THE Union Election Commission is committed to holding the 2020 general elections while meeting five standards: freedom of choice, fairness, transparency, accessibility and compatibility of the public desire with the results of the election.

With the assignment of a media relations official, the commission will release news of public interest in state-run newspapers, TV and UEC websites. Hence, the media is obliged to attach great importance to its ethics to report accurately in the interests of the people and the country.

Regarding the elections, the role of media begins when voter registration is carried out. Avoid taking sides in media reports, reporting false news and spreading hate speech on social media, which can cause undesired effects during the general elections.

Meanwhile, political parties are urged to follow the laws and rules during the campaign period, so it can help reduce problems.

Further, when the UEC conducts training courses for political parties and to increase the participation by women and youths in the elections, all political parties need to equally participate in the trainings, which will focus on ethical codes, laws and bylaws for political parties and representatives.

The UEC’s Strategic Plan (2019-2022) encompassed equal and inclusive participation for women, ethnic people, people living with disabilities and other minority groups.
