Clashes erupt over new Indonesian labor law

Tens of thousands of people across Indonesia have taken to the streets to protest a new law they say threatens labor rights. Some demonstrators in the capital clashed with police.

Protesters, including labor organization members and students, gathered near the presidential palace and other important facilities in Jakarta on Thursday.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. Some demonstrators became violent, hurling stones and setting fire to police posts and other facilities.

A police spokesperson says about 1,000 protesters were detained in Jakarta.

The protests erupted after parliament enacted the controversial law on Monday. The government of President Joko Widodo says the legislation will help attract foreign investment to the country through a review of labor standards. But labor groups are demanding the law be repealed.
