On Tuesday, Minister for the Cabinet Office David Lidington admitted that there is not enough time left to get a Brexit deal ratified before the elections.

He added that the government will redouble its efforts to achieve the departure, ideally before the European Parliament is convened in July.

The country was asked to take part in the European Parliament elections if its parliament failed to ratify the Brexit deal before the elections.

Criticism is mounting over the government's handling of the Brexit process. The newly launched Brexit Party's only campaign pledge is to make Britain's departure from the EU happen.

It appears that the upcoming election will serve in effect as another national referendum on whether the country should leave the EU.
