Azerbaijan, Armenia FMs to meet mediating nations

Azerbaijan and Armenia say their foreign ministers will hold separate talks with countries mediating in the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The United States, Russia and France have been mediators in the long-standing conflict over the autonomous region in Azerbaijan. The mountain enclave is effectively controlled by ethnic Armenians.

They have been calling for an immediate ceasefire since the latest fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces erupted on September 27.

Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said its minister Jeyhun Bayramov will meet representatives of the three countries in Geneva on Thursday and make clear Azerbaijan's position.

The Armenian foreign ministry said its minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan will visit Moscow on Monday for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

But Azerbaijan and Armenia remain wide apart in their positions and finding common ground for a ceasefire will not be easy.

Azerbaijan, which is backed by Turkey, is demanding that Armenian forces withdraw from the autonomous region.
