Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will leave for New York on Monday to attend the UN General Assembly and hold bilateral summits with US and Iranian leaders.
Abe will give a speech at the UN General Assembly. He will meet separately with US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to help ease tensions in the Middle East following attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
Abe is also expected to discuss with Trump a new bilateral trade deal. The two leaders will not sign the deal as initially expected to allow time for legal issues to be checked. They are likely to go over the final draft of the document.
Abe is not expected to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in while in New York.
After New York, Abe will travel to Brussels, Belgium, to attend the "EU-Asia Connectivity" forum and give a speech on the importance of strengthening political and economic relations between Europe and Asia.
