Wildfires approach California's wine country

The largest wildfires in California history are spreading to its world-famous wine-producing regions after raging along the West Coast for two months.

The fires have already burned about 1.45 million hectares of mountains in California and about 400,000 hectares in neighboring Oregon, and show few signs of receding.

Gusty winds have fanned a major fire that started on Sunday in California's northern counties of Napa and Sonoma, which are home to renowned wine-producing regions such as Napa Valley.

Local fire officials say the blazes have damaged the vineyards of two wineries and spread to resort hotels, forcing more than 68,000 people to evacuate.

They say the fires are spreading too fast to be brought under control.

California governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma, and Shasta counties on Monday, and asked the federal government for assistance.
