Meiktila hiking team plans third climb to Mount Phon Kan Razi

5 March

Officials and members of the Meiktila hiking and mountaineering club will scale the 11,920-feet Mount Phon Kan Razi in Putao Township on 31 March for the third time.

“A team from the Meiktila hiking and mountaineering club will climb Mount Phon Kan Razi for the third time. The team will leave Meiktila for Putao Township on 30 March to climb Mount Phon Kan Razi, which is 11,920 feet high, on 31 March. A total of nine members from the club will reach the foot of Mount Phon Kan Razi. Doctors on the team will provide free medical treatment to locals residing in villages near Mount Phon Kan Razi. Then, the team will climb the mountain. The team will have two female members,” said Dr. Myat Min, chairman of the Meiktila hiking and mountaineering club. The chairman was part of the team which climbed Mount Phon Kan Razi the first time.

Twenty members from the club tried to scale Mount Phon Kan Razi for the second time on 4 March, 2019. However, they only managed to reach 11,000 feet because of inclement weather.

“For me, this will be the second climb to Mount Phon Kan Razi. The objective of the Meiktila hiking and mountaineering club is to make youth interested in mountain climbing, keep them away from drug abuse, and learn to love nature. We will allow members to participate in the trip after screening their application forms to check if they have experience in climbing three mountains,” said Ko Zayar, an executive of the Meiktila hiking and mountaineering club.

Members of the club climb Mt Elephant, Mt Myinmahti, and Mt Pyaikkhaeywe (East and West), among others, every year. They began scaling Mount Phon Kan Razi three years ago. In December, the club members plan to climb Mt Phonyin Razi or Mt Madwe.—Chan Tha (Meiktila) (Translated by Hay Mar)
