Bushfire torches 36 houses in Mong Hsat Township

At least 36 houses were burnt to ashes in a bushfire in Pontat and Khatkya Villages in Mong Hsat Township, Shan State (East) on 2 April.


The forest fire broke out near Pontat Village at about 2:00 p.m. on 2 April and torched the house of U Kya He and spread to other houses in the village. 


Upon receiving information about the fire, firemen from the Township Fire Services Department rushed to the scene to fight the fire in cooperation with villagers including auxiliary fire brigade members, policemen and security forces, and the blaze was successfully extinguished at around 5:00 pm. 


The blaze consumed 32 houses including a primary school, causing a loss of K 410000. But no casualties were reported.


In a similar incident, the bushfire broke out near Khatkya Village in Mong Hsat Township at about 3:00 p.m. on the same day and destroyed four houses made of bamboo and thatch, causing a loss of K 148000.


All fire victims are currently taking shelter at the homes of their relatives in the villages and are provided with relief supplies by local authorities.—Myint Maung, IPRD
