14 killed in hospital attack in Afghanistan

An attack on a maternity hospital in the Afghan capital has killed at least 14 people, including newborn babies.

Gunmen stormed the hospital in Kabul on Tuesday following an explosion. The facility is run by the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders.

Mothers, babies and nurses were caught in the crossfire between militants and security forces. Sixteen people were reportedly injured.

Sources at the hospital say about 100 people were in the compound around the facility at the time.

Reports say the security forces killed three of the gunmen.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. The country has seen a spate of violence from both the Taliban and the Islamic State militant group.

Assaults on healthcare facilities have raised concerns in Afghanistan, where the coronavirus is spreading.
