Thakhin Mya (7 October 1897 -- 19 July 1947)

In commemoration of 73 th Martyrs' Day

 

HE SERVED as the Minister of Home Affairs in General Aung San’s Cabinet. He was born on Thursday, 7 October 1897 in Hton Bo, Pyay District. His parents were U Boe Chone and Daw Thet Lea. His childhood name was Maung Mya Shwe and had only younger sister Ma Mya Ngwe, who became a nun called Daw Khaemarwaddy.

 

He attended primary school in Thayarwady Anglican Board of Mission (ABM) School then moved to Yangon Baptist High School to finish his matriculation. In 1916, he took admission at I.Sc. in Rangoon College. He finished his study of I.Sc. in Rangoon College and Calcutta University with distinction in Chemistry.

 

He led the students’ strike of Rangoon College in 1920-21. He was a deputy president of the strike committee and also was a member of National Education Council.

 

1922-23 — He was a headmaster of Kyee Myin Taing National School. However, he quitted his membership in the National Education Council.

 

1924 — He graduated B.Sc. with Chemistry distinction.

 

1926 — He married Daw Khin Nyunt. When he finished LL.B. in 1926, he became a lawyer.

 

1936 — He joined ‘Dobama Asiayone’ and became Thakhin Mya, later on, he was elected Member of Parliament. He quitted his job as an MP on 20 December 1938.

 

He was elected as president of All-Burma Farmers Organization in 1939 and the same time he led People’s Revolutionary Party (PRP) that was for independence from the British Emperor. He served as Minister and Deputy Prime Minister during WWII.

 

1944 — He led the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL) to revolutionize Japan.

 

In October 1946, he became a minister in General Aung San’s cabinet. He and other cabinet ministers including Prime Minister General Aung San were assassinated on 19 July 1947 in Yangon.

 

He was survived by his wife Daw Khin Nyunt alone.
