Myanmar participates in 2021 global rural development forum

UNION Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe participated in the 2021 Global Rural Development Forum chaired by the National Revitalization Administration of the People’s Republic of China through videoconferencing yesterday.

 

At the forum, Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China Mr Hu Chunhua addressed delivered an opening speech, and Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Mr Jamshid Kuchkarov, Director-General of FAO Dr Qu Dongyu, ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi, the Administrator of the National Rural Development and Revitalization Administration of China gave the speeches on the plans for global sustainable development cooperation for poverty alleviation and rural development and further processes.

 

Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development of Myanmar U Hla Moe said Myanmar is making great efforts for rural development by implementing poverty reduction measures to achieve sustainable development goals. The Government is paying attention to the socio-economic development of the vulnerable and underprivileged people, and an emphasis is being placed to narrow the development gap between rural and urban areas, regions and states, he continued. At the same time, the national development strategy is giving priority to balanced economic development and accelerating poverty alleviation activities, he added.

 

The Union Minister also spoke about the Myanmar Economic Recovery and Reform Plan (MERRP) which is being drawn up to revitalize Myanmar’s economy which has been affected due to the COVID-19 outbreak and to create a viable business environment for the long-term development of the people.

 

Myanmar is focusing on rural infrastructure development, raising rural livelihoods and family income, development of SMEs and cooperatives based on the agriculture and livestock sector. The Union Minister also clarified that community-based development activities are being carried out so that rural women and young people, who are the main drivers for sustainable development, can participate in village development activities.

 

The forum also discussed the activities for poverty reduction and rural development by setting sustainable development goals, achievements, experiences and plans for the future, global cooperation for poverty alleviation and rural development and living standards. — MNA
