The local maize growers from Latpanchaypaw village in Nyaung-U district, Mandalay region are making a good profit by growing maize the whole year, according to the local maize growers.
The villagers from Latpanchaypaw village are living by growing the crops on farmlands next to the Nyaung U-Myingyan-Pakokku highway road.
The villagers from Latpanchaypaw village-tract are growing maize the whole year. They are growing maize four times per year. They are also developing other crops like sugarcane with underground water and river water.
The yielded maize is piled on the side of the road and sold to the pilgrims and the maize traders from Myingyan, Pakokku, Ngathayouk, Nyaung-U and Bagan. The Pilin Kanthayar elephant camp also comes to buy the maize to feed the elephants.
The maize is also sent to Yangon and Mandalay by trucks. Each time, the local growers are sending 20,000 or 30,000 maize.
The wholesale price is K120 for ten maize when they are sent to Yangon and Mandalay. If the local trader comes to buy on the farmland, the maize is sold for K80. We have to grow the maize for 90 days in monsoon season and 75 days in summer,” said U Win Tin, a local maize seller.
The maize is mostly grown in Shan State (South & North), Kachin State and Kayah State. The corn is also grown in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Ayeyawady regions. Myanmar exports maize annually to Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong markets. —Ko Htein (KPD)
