Fashion designer Ungaro dies at 86

French fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro died on Saturday at age 86.


The founder of the Ungaro brand was born in in southern France in 1933 to a family of Italian immigrants.


He moved to Paris in his 20s and was trained under Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga.


In 1965, he founded his own brand.


He quickly gained fame for his bright colors and elegant clothes favored by celebrities such as Catherine Deneuve.


He retired in 2004, and spent the final two years of his life in weakening health.
