Northern Europe raises alert for Omicron variant

December 8

Countries in Northern Europe are raising their alert levels against the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Health authorities in Denmark said on Tuesday that 398 Omicron infections have been confirmed in the country so far.

They said the cases include those unrelated to international travel, in a sign that the variant is spreading domestically.

Authorities in Norway have registered 29 Omicron infections. Thirteen cases were confirmed last week among people who attended a Christmas party in the capital, Oslo.

The Norwegian government has responded by tightening anti-infection rules, including mandatory mask-wearing at shopping centers and other crowded settings.

Officials say they hope to vaccinate more people while suppressing the spread of the highly-mutated variant with stricter regulations.
