Sagaing fresh, dried tea leaves to be available in Mandalay market

Myanmar tea leaves are naturally grown without using any chemicals. Tea leaves in the Sagaing region are cultivated mostly in Homalin Township.

 

The growers from the Sagaing region are distributing their fresh and dried tea leaves primarily to the Mandalay market, it is learnt.

 

We are sending the fresh and dried tea leaves from Homalin township mainly to Mandalay market. We are also sending them to the Monywa market. The price of fresh tea leaves is quite lower this year compared with a year earlier. The growers are blaming the pandemic for fresh tea leaves price drop. However, the price of dried tea leaves has risen somewhat,” said Daw Su Su Htway, the head of the agriculture department from Homalin Township.

 

Last year, the fresh tea leaves prices were fetched K1,500 per viss while the dried tea leaves were K4,500 per viss. This year, the price of fresh tea leaves are sold for K1,300 per viss whereas the dried leave is priced at K5,500 per viss.

There are some 8,900 hectares of tea planted across Myanmar and most of them were exported to China market. Although local tea is exported to Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore, the largest market remains China. — Lulay/GNLM
